A STORY
OF WOMEN
Since 1948, Atelier Saint-Luc has embodied exceptional craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation. More than just a company, it is a family adventure driven by passionate women, united by the same commitment: to preserve and enhance our written heritage.
CHAPTER 1: 1948
— The story begins with a visionary woman.
In the heart of Vieux-Mans, Marthe Froment, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, founded the Atelier Saint-Luc with her husband at 12 rue des Fosses Saint-Pierre.
Initially working alone in her studio, she later built a family team consisting of her husband and their two children (including Dominique Froment), as well as two operators. She shapes every book with rare meticulousness, combining tradition with aesthetic demands.
In a craft where patience and technical mastery are essential, she established her signature: exceptional bookbinding, executed in the purest artisanal tradition. She also imparts a philosophy: that of work well done, excellence, and the importance of passing on skills.
CHAPTER 2: 1974
— THE SECOND GENERATION TAKES UP THE TORCH
In 1974, his son, Dominique Froment, carried on the family legacy. The workshop grew, modernized, and weathered its first major challenge: the 1973 expropriation, necessitated by the clearing of the ramparts of Vieux-Mans.
A fresh start was required. The workshop moved to the Northern Industrial Zone, into more spacious premises. This change marked a key milestone: for the first time, apprentices were trained and the team expanded, reaching 13 people by 1985. This transition testifies to a natural evolution: combining the transmission of artisanal expertise with a more ambitious structure.
CHAPTER 3: 2001
— THE CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY CALL FOR REINVENTION.
Following Dominique FROMENT's retirement in 1997, it was his daughter, Cécile BARRIER, who took on the responsibility of preserving and developing the Atelier. A graduate of the U.C.A.D. in Paris (Central Union of Decorative Arts), she brought her technical expertise and a fresh perspective on the future of artisanal bookbinding. Alongside her, her husband, Claude BARRIER, infused the company with new dynamism by structuring its management and strengthening the Atelier's presence in the national market.
A second move in 2001, to Coulaines, marked this rise in momentum:
- A larger space to modernize the Atelier.
- A strong bond between management and artisans, ensuring a spirit of teamwork and innovation.
- A vision focused on the future, while preserving historical values.
CHAPTER 4: 2023
— A STORY OF WOMEN, A SEAMLESS TRANSMISSION.
In 2023, Lucie BARRIER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barrier, took the reins of the Atelier, becoming the fourth generation to carry on this art. The 20 members of the Atelier continue their work with greater autonomy and expertise that is still being passed down.
But every era brings its own challenges. While previous generations had to face industrial changes and the digital revolution, she is part of a new era—one of artificial intelligence and ultra-digitalization. How can we preserve and promote manual expertise in a world dominated by the virtual? Several answers are already being written to perpetuate this unique know-how.
CHAPTER 5: 2025
— A NEW AMBITION, A STRATEGIC TURNING POINT IS UNDERWAY.
In response to market changes and the new expectations of collectors, private individuals, and companies, a new brand is emerging in 2025: Saint-Luc Héritage.
- A high-end positioning, designed to appeal to lovers of fine craftsmanship.
- An international focus, to showcase French excellence worldwide.
- Strong artisanal roots, combined with a modern and innovative approach.
Thus, the Atelier Saint-Luc continues to reinvent itself while remaining true to its founding values: tradition, transmission, and excellence.
